IKEA crib mattress recall expands to 300,000 due to entrapment risk

PITTSBURGH — A total of about 300,000 crib mattresses sold at IKEA have been recalled because of a risk of entrapment.

About 169,000 VYSSA crib mattresses were recalled in January, with the expansion now including an additional 131,000 of the SULTAN crib mattresses.

The recall includes the following model names of the two mattresses: SULTAN BLUNDA, SULTAN DRÖMMA, SULTAN SNARKA, SULTAN SUSSA, VYSSA VACKERT, VYSSA VINKA, VYSSA SPELEVINK, VYSSA SLÖA and VYSSA SLUMMER.

The recalled mattresses are 52 inches long and 27½ inches wide, were manufactured on May 4, 2014 or earlier and were sold exclusively in IKEA stores nationwide and online at ikea-usa.com from October 2000 to May 2014 for about $20 to $100.

The crib mattresses could create a gap between the mattress and crib ends larger than allowed by federal regulations, which poses an entrapment hazard to infants.

The recall comes after the U.S. Consumer Product Safety received two reports of infants becoming trapped between the mattress and an end of the crib. The children were removed from the gaps without injury.

Consumers should immediately stop using a recalled mattress and inspect it to make sure there is no gap larger than the width of two fingers between the ends of the crib and the mattress.

If any gap is larger, customers should immediately stop using the recalled mattresses and return them to any IKEA store for an exchange or a full refund.
