Kennywood's Noah's Ark to be returned to classic funhouse style

WEST MIFFLIN, Pa. — Kennywood Park visitors will soon be able to enjoy the classic funhouse style Noah’s Ark attraction they remember from their younger years.

Celebrating its 80th anniversary this year, the walk-through ride is getting a makeover taking it back to its original glory days. Since the ride first opened in 1936, it has undergone two renovations during the 1960s and in 1996, according to Channel 11's news exchange partner TribLive.

The renovation will bring back the beloved giant whale’s mouth, which visitors walked through on a springy, squishy tongue-like surface, according to TribLive. The vibrating floors and animal theme will remain on the ark.

According to TribLive, the renovations have already started on the interior of the ride, and plans are to have it completed by opening day this spring.

“We're looking at doing a pretty extensive renovation to the attraction, to kind of take it back to the classic funhouse style — a little bit of what had been taken away in the renovation in 1996,” Kennywood spokesman Nick Paradise told TribLive. “We are trying to get it back to what a lot of people remember from their childhood.”

Despite guest disappointment in the most recent renovations, Noah’s Ark was named the Best Funhouse/Walk-Through Attraction at the Golden Ticket Awards Ceremonies in 2015 for the sixth consecutive year, according to TribLive.
