3 taken into custody after shooting at Dormont bar

DORMONT, Pa. — Bullets and flying glass sent dozens of people running for cover at a Dormont bar early Thursday morning.

Police said the shooting happened just before 2 a.m. at the R Bar on West Liberty Avenue.

Dormont Police Chief Phil Ross said Anthony Nania, 21, Charles Friedel, 21, and a third person were taken into custody in connection with the shooting that injured at least one person.

Ross said two of the men being questioned got into an altercation involving the bartender before the shooting. The men were kicked out of the bar and returned about an hour later, police said.

Witnesses said one of the men reached into his jacket and moments later, three shots were fired.

"It appeared that the bullet that went through the glass door went into a small refrigerator.  I think if the shooting had occurred directly in the front door someone probably could have got hurt because it would have been a direct line into the bar where the people where," Ross said.

Investigators said 40 people were inside the bar at the time of the shooting.

Police said the men took off in a car driven by a woman. They were taken into custody for questioning a short time later.

One person was taken to a nearby hospital to be treated for injuries. There is no word on their condition.
