GARRETT, Pa. - A Somerset County woman and her unborn baby were killed Tuesday afternoon when she was struck by lightning.
Officials said 36-year-old Mary Yoder, who was 9 months pregnant, was hit on Rockdale Road in Summit Township about 11 a.m. while taking cover from a storm under a pine tree.
According to state police, Yoder, her husband and two of their children were in the woods near their house picking blueberries when it began to storm.
Detectives said Yoder took shelter under one tree and her husband and two children took shelter under another tree nearby.
Yoder’s husband was also hit and slightly injured, officials said. The children were not injured.
