JEANNETTE, Pa. — A crime spree that ended with police firing shots outside a Walgreens actually started in a normally quiet Jeannette neighborhood.
Maggie Abel and her husband live on Vine Street. She said they had no clue their home was connected to an armed robbery and police firing shots at a North Huntingdon Walgreens Wednesday morning.
“It’s unsettling,” Abel said. “I would say that’s the biggest key. Of course, we are OK, but it is unsettling and highly unusual.”
According to police, Sean Lane broke into the Abels’ basement around 2 a.m. Wednesday, looking for pills. A broken window is now boarded up behind their shrubs.
After his arrest, Lane told police he found two oxycodone pills in the Abels’ bathroom and took them. He then got a gun from a different home and drove to the North Huntingdon Walgreens to demand Percocet from the pharmacy.
Police said Lane held three pharmacists at gunpoint and pointed his gun at officers before they fired.
Police fired shots at Lane once he left the store but didn’t hit him, and then took him to the hospital for withdrawal symptoms.
Lane is being held at the Westmoreland County Prison without bail.
Abel still can’t believe she didn’t hear the break-in.
“That’s the most unsettling part about it, and it has been repaired, so I think we are getting a security system ASAP because I don’t know that anybody is totally safe from everything ever, so we have to kind of be careful,” Abel said.
