“I know that safety is very important and training is always being had. But accidents do happen, and it’s a shame,” said former coal miner Brad Myers.
Myers said the community in Mt. Morris and Bobtown feel for Kelly’s family.
“Everyone is heartbroken any time this happens -- coal or gas related. Someone in our community is not here anymore and everyone is saddened by it,” said Myers.
Channel 11 News has learned the DEP has cited the company with several serious violations, including loose gravel in the travel way, improper use of ventilation doors, improperly installed ventilation doors that weren’t bolted to the roof and illegal hard hats -- saying the miner wasn’t wearing an appropriate hat.
“The company is fully cooperating in the investigation into the circumstances that led to this accident,” the company said in a statement. “During this very difficult time, we extend our heartfelt thoughts and prayers to Bill’s family, to all our employees and to all who knew Bill.”
The cause and manner of death is pending autopsy results.
The investigation continues. Federal and state mine safety agencies have been notified.
Operations at the mine have been suspended.
