Firefighters believe an elderly man died Tuesday morning in a fire at a home in Donegal Township, Westmoreland County.
The three-alarm fire broke out on Schoolhouse Lane shortly after 7 a.m.
According to investigators, an 82-year-old man who lived in the home with a daughter and grandson was unable to make it out.
“He went down around 5 o’clock in the morning to stoke the fire. Around 7 o’clock in the morning, another resident of the house woke up and saw smoke,” said Pennsylvania State Police Trooper Steve Limani.
Authorities said they believe the man collapsed in the basement of the home.
“They were able to run almost a mile of hose from a location to get water to the residence to put the fire out,” Limani said.
Though state police have not yet officially named the victim, the man’s family identified him as RJ Kunkle.
The family told Channel 11’s Joe Holden that Kunkle served in the Navy and worked in the carpenters union. He had been retired for 22 years.
“My dad was a hard worker,” said Connie Dennison, the victim’s daughter. "He never let a day go by where he wasn't busy with something here on the farm."
Two others, including Kunkle’s grandson, were able to escape the fire unharmed.
