"We were acting based on the neighbors' complaints that he was firing a gun in the air," said Cmdr. Jason Lando.
According to Pittsburgh Public Information Officer Sonya Toler, the man came out of the home and fired five shots before ignoring subsequent commands to come out of the home. No one was injured in the gunfire.
The suspect's mother came out of the home at an earlier time and was not harmed, said Toler.
"It's our contention that he's got some mental health issues and we're unsure why he fired the shots, but he at no time threatened to injure his mother and he never made any verbal statements or displayed a weapon toward the police," said Lando.
Police said the man, who has not been identified, will receive mental health treatment.
