Mon Valley blast furnace remains temporarily idled

PITTSBURGH — A blast furnace at the Mon Valley Works remains temporarily idled along with four other United States Steel Corp. operations at least throughout the beginning of 2023.

Blast furnace No. 3, part of U.S. Steel’s steelmaking capability in the Pittsburgh region, had seen its previously scheduled outage moved up a month to September and then hasn’t been returned to service amid market conditions in the steel industry. It can produce up to 1.4 million tons of raw steel a year and there is no timeline for when it will be restarted, although the other Mon Valley Works steelmaking remains open.

U.S. Steel earlier this year temporarily idled a blast furnace and a tin line at Gary Works, also due to a softening steel market and the impact of steel and tin imports. The Gary Works and Mon Valley Works blast furnaces and tin line are in its North American flat-rolled division.
