PITTSBURGH — In its latest ranking of the best big cities in which to live, Money magazine named Pittsburgh the top "urban gem" in the Northeast.
The magazine compared 63 cities with more than 300,000 residents – 63 in all – and used factors such as job market, affordable housing, accessibility to health care, culture, open space and crime rates to compile its list.

The University of Pittsburgh and Carnegie Mellon University were highlighted as key components to the Steel City’s success in reinventing itself for the 21st century.
According to the article, work in computer-related fields in Pittsburgh has grown at twice the rate of the national average in recent years.
Rounding out the top five cities in the nation were Tampa, ranked best in the Southeast; Denver, ranked best in the West; Omaha, ranked best in the Midwest; and Mesa, ranked best in the Southwest.
