MILLVALE, Pa. — The Allegheny County Medical Examiner's Office confirmed Friday that a 22-year-old mother and her 9-month-old son found dead inside a Millvale apartment in March both died of natural causes.

Sara Kessler and her child, Casey Kessler, were found by a relative, who had not heard from his sister in a week, at the Krismor apartment complex on Butler Street on March 6.

Sara Kessler died natural causes, specifically bronchial pneumonia caused by a bacterial infection of the heart, according to the Allegheny County Medical Examiner's Office.

Casey Kessler, left alone with nobody to feed or take care of him, died of dehydration, the medical examiner's office said. His death was ruled an accident.

Three healthy-looking house cats were also found in the second floor apartment.

Police said the animals may have survived because of an automatic feeder.
