New US Steel Community Field at Hazelwood Green hosts inaugural football games

PITTSBURGH — The U.S. Steel Community Field at Hazelwood Green hosted its inaugural football games, featuring athletes from the Hazelwood Cobras youth league.

The venue features a full-size athletic field with seating for approximately 3,000 spectators. It will serve as the permanent home of the Central Catholic High School Vikings football team, which is scheduled to play its first stadium game against Pine Richland High School on Sept. 11.

The facility was created through a collaboration among the Richard King Mellon Foundation, Tishman Speyer, Hazelwood Green Youth Sports Charities, Steelers Charities, U. S. Steel, Central Catholic High School and the NFL Foundation.

Managed by The Sports Facilities Companies, the complex includes a press box, a concession stand and a renovated 10,000-square-foot building.

The opening event brought together community leaders, local residents and project partners for a series of games. Players ranged from 5-year-old flag football participants to 12- and 13-year-old athletes.

A halftime ceremony featured the presentation of “game balls” to recognize Hazelwood Cobras players and volunteers.

Event activities also included face painting, a balloon artist, a caricature artist and yard games.

The field is situated within Hazelwood Green, a 178-acre mixed-use development along the Monongahela River in Hazelwood.

Pitt BioForge, an advanced manufacturing facility for precision medicine, is scheduled to open at Hazelwood Green next year.

Carnegie Mellon University opened its Robotics Innovation Center at the site in February, while construction is currently underway on multi-family housing that includes affordable units.
