The legend who once wore No. 8 may have had his number retired in 1982, but the U.S. Postal Service and Pittsburgh Pirates want the spirit of Willie Stargell to live on by encouraging a letter writing campaign with his forever stamps.
The Postal Office and Pirates designated Aug. 8 the day to kickoff the "8 on 8" campaign which wants fans to mail eight letters to friends and family using the Stargell stamps.
The commemorative postal items are available at the available select Pittsburgh-area branches: McKnight, Monroeville, Pleasant Hills, Montour, Allegheny, Pittsburgh Main (CaliforniaAve.) and Grant Street.
Stargell led the Pirates to a World Series win in 1979 and was the team's general manager until his death in 2001.
The Pirates built a statue to honor his legacy outside of PNC Park which opened for a new season the very day he died.
