NORTH STRABANE, Pa. — A 5-year-old child was inside a North Strabane Township Fire Department squad car when it was involved in an accident late Thursday morning.
The two-vehicle crash happened on Route 19 at Weavertown Road just before 10:30 a.m., according to the North Strabane Township Police Department.
The squad car was responding, with emergency lights and siren activated, to an active fire call.
Gary Zimak Jr., 37, of North Strabane Township, was driving the fire department vehicle -- a 2009 Dodge Charger -- south on Route 19 in the right lane of traffic when the accident occurred.
Zimak Jr., a volunteer firefighter with the North Strabane Volunteer Fire Department, was transported to Allegheny General Hospital for treatment of injuries sustained in the crash.
Zimak's 5-year-old son, in a booster seat located in the rear of the vehicle's passenger side, was treated at the scene for minor injuries.
Jill Fountaine, 42, of Venetia, was operating the second vehicle involved -- a 2011 Honda Pilot. She sustained minor injuries and was also treated at the scene.
