17-year-old charged after 2 officers shot at in Stowe Township

STOWE TOWNSHIP, Pa. — A 17-year-old is facing charges after two officers were shot at in Stowe Township on Tuesday afternoon.

The shooting took place in the 700 block of Woodward Avenue just after 2 p.m.

“Pow, pow, pow, pow, pow,” is how Kris Jones described the shootout that unfolded in front of her home.

“I was in the shower and I heard like six shots, ‘Pow, pow, pow,’ and I jumped and I ran and looked out the window like, ‘What the heck?’” added neighbor Kim Austin. “The next thing you know, you see all the ambulances, you know what I’m saying, the police cars.”

A McKees Rocks officer and a Stowe Township officer were on the street in a car as part of an overall investigation into gun violence.

The officers were plainclothes detectives in an unmarked car. The suspect saw them and opened fire on the car.

The officers fired back.

“They encountered an armed individual who fired shots at them. The officers were able to return fire. Neither officer was injured. We don’t believe the suspect was struck either,” said Superintendent Chris Kearns, with Allegheny County Police.

The suspect, who police have identified as Delvonte Woodson, 17, got away. He was arrested Tuesday evening and will be charged as an adult.

Woodson is facing multiple charges including criminal attempted homicide, assault of a law enforcement officer and illegal possession of a firearm.

He will be taken to the Allegheny County Jail.

This incident comes less than 24 hours after a 19-year-old was gunned down less than a mile away on Boquet Street in McKees Rocks.

McKees Rocks Chief Rick Deliman responded to this latest violent crime.

“Unfortunately, that’s a reflection of the way the world is today. We can’t make sense of it, we’re just trying to combat it,” Deliman said.
