MILLVALE, Pa. — State police are investigating after a Pittsburgh Public Schools bus lost a wheel Tuesday morning while transporting about 30 students in Millvale.
Authorities said the incident was reported about 7 a.m. Tuesday along Route 28 just north of the Millvale exit.
The bus, which was taking kids to the Obama School in East Liberty, was able to come to a stop off the road, and it was later towed from the scene. The bus driver told police he noticed the bus shaking, so he pulled over and saw the wheel hanging from the axle.
"I'm sure they were all thinking, 'What's going?' and freaking out," freshman Selena Nieves said. "They were probably thinking 'What's going to happen to us? Are we going to be OK? Are we going to see tomorrow?'"
Officials confirmed there were about 30 students on the bus at the time, but no injuries were reported.
According to police, the bus company will be cited because the inspection was expired.
Parents, including Princess Fergason, told Channel 11's Cara Sapida that the incident is unacceptable.
"I used to drive buses, and they probably did the pretrip check that buses do in the morning. They have to go around the whole bus and check its wheels and tires," Fergason said.
The bus company, Ricketts Transportation on the North Side, has not commented about the incident.
