Plum Borough volunteer fire departments suspend services due to ‘temporary mix-up’

PLUM BOROUGH, Pa. — Plum’s four volunteer fire departments were out of service for about six hours on Tuesday.

Service was restored at around 8 p.m. Tuesday evening.

Plum’s Borough Manager, Michael Thomas, said the temporary service interruption was all one big mix caused by a new address.

Borough officials moved into their new Municipal Center at the end of 2022, but Thomas said that not all of their mail was rerouted, including an important insurance bill.

“I’m glad it’s over and they are back to normal, " said resident, Debbie Traux.

Tuesday, four Plum Borough volunteer fire departments, Holiday Park, Logans Ferry, Renton, and Unity, suspended services.

They notified residents that neighboring departments would handle emergency calls.

Multiple departments posted that their worker’s compensation insurance, which the borough pays for, had lapsed, causing panic.

“I think firefighter safety is of utmost importance and them being compensated for any injury,” said Claire Laufer, a resident of the neighboring community.

Thomas said they never needed to pause their response because the borough was within a 30-day grace period for coverage.

“The coverage for the volunteer firefighters was never out of effect,” Thomas said.

However, the borough did miss a payment at the beginning of the year because their office moved.
