Police: Drunken man, 24, punched 15-year-old, assaulted officer at Steelers game

PITTSBURGH — Police said an intoxicated 24-year-old man was arrested and taken to the Allegheny County Jail Sunday after punching a 15-year-old in the face and assaulting a police officer.

According to the police report, Shane Martin, of Springdale, punched the teenage victim, who plays on West Allegheny High School’s football team, without reason and broke the boy’s nose while attending the Steelers game at Heinz Field.

When the arresting officer approached Martin, officials said he clenched his fist and took “an aggressive stance.”

“It appeared that the male was highly intoxicated due to the fact that he would either mumble incoherently and was having trouble maintaining his balance,” the police report stated.

As police attempted to escort Martin out of the stadium, the officer said, he became agitated and kicked an officer in the leg.

Martin was taken to the Allegheny County Jail on several charges, including aggravated assault.

The boy was treated by medics at Heinz Field and was later taken to UPMC Mercy Hospital to be treated for a broken nose and related injuries.

West Allegheny school officials declined to comment on the incident. They also chose to not identify the student who was attacked.

The Steelers released the following statement Monday, “Heinz Field management works closely with our security staff and the City of Pittsburgh Police. We do not tolerate this type of behavior. The ticket privileges of the individual involved will be suspended.”
