Police charge mom for leaving hospital with child

PITTSBURGH — A Pittsburgh woman is jailed on a charge that she endangered her child by leaving a hospital with her daughter after the youngster was diagnosed with a fractured neck vertebra.

Aliya Bey, of Homewood, took her 3-year-old daughter to Shadyside Hospital Friday because the child had a stiff neck, police said. The girl was then transported to Children’s Hospital after X-rays determined the child had a fracture of the C-2 vertebra.
Despite the child’s injury, Bey later removed her daughter from the hospital against medical advice because she became tired of waiting, according to a criminal complaint.
Police were alerted to the incident by a doctor, who said a fracture of the C-2, which controls the diaphragm, could prevent breathing and become fatal if the neck shifts. The doctor also explained that the injury did not appear to be the result of abuse.
The 3-year-old’s grandmother told Channel 11’s Alan Jennings that Bey is a good mother.
“Aliya is a good mother. She’s a very good mother. Their personal belongings are right here,” Dora Paschal said.
Paschal spoke highly of her granddaughter Monday.
“She’s 3 years old and she’s a wonderful, intelligent little rascal,” Paschal said. “She is just so awesome.”
A district judge set bail at $25,000 when Bey was arraigned Saturday. The 32-year-old faces a preliminary hearing Oct. 24.
