Shaler Area, North Hills officials notify parents of possible bus driver strike

PITTSBURGH — Shaler Area and North Hills school district officials have been notified of the possibility that the workers of the company they use for student transportation will go on strike.

First Student, which is the contracted transportation provider for the schools, said that the company’s 170 employees could begin the strike as early as May 15.

The First Student bus drivers rejected the company’s best possible and final offer on April 23.

The school districts stated in the letters to parents that they do not anticipate a strike to occur.

If the strike does happen, classes in both districts will go on as scheduled for the remainder of the academic year. Families will then be left up to finding transportation to school for their children.

That doesn’t sit well with some of the people Channel 11 talked to Tuesday.

Morgan Dulacy, a graduate of Shaler High School, said it would cause a major inconvenience.

“Some kids’ parents leave before they even get up to go to school,” she said.

Resident Cindy Hutchinson felt the same way and said both sides should compromise to reach common ground.

“That’s terrible. Now I have to find other relatives to pick up the kids,” she said. “Why can’t you come up with an agreement and talk about it? Be mature.”

Both sides are expected to head back to the negotiating table next Tuesday.
