State regulators: we'll evaluate Western Psych

None — PITTSBURGH (AP) -- State regulators said they will evaluate a Pennsylvania psychiatric clinic where a gunman opened fire to see if it followed protocols meant to keep patients and employees safe.

The departments of health and public welfare said they have no immediate plans to inspect Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic. Instead, agency officials will use the results of a police investigation and the hospital's internal probe to assess if protocols were followed and regulatory action necessary.

Each department has a hand in inspecting and regulating Pennsylvania mental institutions.

The Department of Public Welfare informed Western Psychiatric on Friday, one day after shooting, that its license was renewed for another year. Spokeswoman Carey Miller called the timing "unfortunate" but says the license renewal was based on a clean inspection from January.
