SWAT robot will help keep Pittsburgh officers safe

PITTSBURGH — Only Channel 11 News is uncovering the new tools coming to the Pittsburgh police department; Some of them look like they're straight out of a movie.

On Friday, Target 11 Investigator Rick Earle got a look at the mini-caliber SWAT robot.  It's a portable device with a built-in camera that can be sent into a standoff or to investigate a suspicious package.

"This is life-saving technology, literally.  You have a real device, and we are able to send in a robot rather than officers.  It keeps officers safe.  It keeps the public safe," said Councilman Dan Gilman.

Thanks to a $100,000 grant from the Department of Homeland Security, city council approved the purchase that will replace the bomb squad's 10-year-old robot.

The robot is expected to arrive soon.
