PITTSBURGH — It’s the Terrible Towel’s birthday!

One of the most iconic items in sports today, the Terrible Towel was born on Dec. 27, 1975, created by Myron Cope.

Forty-seven years ago, Cope was charged with coming up with a gimmick. Now, thousands of fans can be found waving the towel during every Steelers game.

In 1996, Cope gave the rights to the Terrible Towel to the Allegheny Valley School in the Pittsburgh suburb of Coraopolis. Proceeds from sales help to fund the school, which serves people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

Fans can learn more about the history of the Pittsburgh Steelers in the Western Pennsylvania Sports Museum’s Super Steelers exhibition. All kids receive free admission until Jan. 8.
