Vigil held for woman killed in Bloomfield shooting; Arrest still pending

PITTSBURGH — A vigil was held Wednesday night for a 20-year-old woman, who was shot to death along with a 16-year-old boy and suspected home invader earlier this week in Pittsburgh’s Bloomfield neighborhood.

Akeilah Solomon, who would have turned 21 next month, will now instead be buried on her mother’s birthday.

Solomon, originally from Penn Hills, was mourned Wednesday night outside the apartment where she, Jaimill Kenney, a 10th grader at University Prep High School, and 25-year-old Kadeem Williams, of Homestead, were killed.

“There are answers that we still need. We're still unsure of exactly what took place, what happened,” Solomon’s cousin, Kieshah Cain Saunders, said.

Saunders said Solomon wasn’t even supposed to be at the apartment the night of the shooting. She said Solomon was supposed to meet up with her mother the night of the fatal shooting but was too tired.

“Actually that day, she just got off from doing a double, at 8:30 that night,” Saunders said.

Prosecutors on Tuesday outlined what they believed happened, saying gunshots were exchanged in the midst of a home invasion. Allegheny County District Attorney Stephen Zappala said Williams, the suspected home invader, was set to commit robbery.

Investigators said that before Williams had the chance, Kenney’s brother, Meiko DeVaughn, started shooting. Zappala said the bullets that killed Williams, Solomon and Kenney matched a gun that DeVaughn had. DeVaughn is wanted on charges of felony possession of a gun, having stolen property and drug possession. He is not being charged with homicide, Zappala said.

According to Zappala, the gun was traced back to a stolen weapon out of Butler County and about $1,000 worth of marijuana and $14,000 in cash was found inside the apartment.

Zappala said he believes a second gun was in play and a second person was outside during the break-in.

Police sources told Channel 11’s Joe Holden that DeVaughn is expected to surrender, but he was still not in custody as of Wednesday night.
