Vigil for man shot over the weekend ends in chaos

HOMEWOOD, Pa. — Channel 11 News was there Tuesday as a vigil for the victim of deadly shooting started with calls to stop the violence, but ended in chaos.

Channel 11's Courtney Brennan attended the vigil along with family, friends, neighbors and strangers to remember 23-year-old Lavar Rich-Menefee.

Menefee was shot and killed over the weekend in Homewood. His father was inconsolable.

“He was the best man at my wedding,” he said while crying.

Investigators said Menefee was shot six times. Witnesses told police they saw three men running from the scene.

“We can’t afford to keep coming to vigil after vigil for people getting killed,” said Menefee’s aunt, Millicent Harvey.

As the night of prayer and remembrance was going on, a car pulled up and people began yelling. Then someone shouted about a gun and everyone went running.

“Whoever did this is a straight coward,” said one person who attended the vigil. “Why do we keep killing each other? For what?”

After that, our Channel 11 News crew left. As they were driving away, a police car with its lights and sirens on headed toward the scene.

The investigation into Menefee’s homicide remains ongoing. No arrests have been made.
