Hundreds of people volunteered Saturday to take down wreaths put up at veteran graves within the National Cemetery of the Alleghenies over the holidays.
Dubbed the “Wreaths Across America Clean-Up Day,” volunteers helped gather the holiday wreaths for recycling.
The wreaths will be shredded and used for compost, or farmers were also encouraged to come out and take the wreaths back to their livestock.
Volunteers say the clean-up is a meaningful gesture.
“My father and some other family members are also buried here, so this place holds a very special place in my heart, and I wanted to give back as much as I can,” Boyd Jones said.
Every year, around 2,000 veterans are laid to rest in the cemetery, so the number of wreaths to place and later remove continues to grow year after year.
