PITTSBURGH — A woman died after police said she led them on a chase through Lawrenceville early Tuesday morning and crashed into a garbage truck.
The Allegheny County Medical Examiner identified the woman as 18-year-old Sara Glaser, of Pittsburgh. Investigators said they tried to pull Glaser over when she was spotted on 16th Street driving without her headlights on.
Police said after running the license plate, officers learned the car had been reported stolen out of McCandless.
After a short pursuit, investigators said they lost the vehicle and a short time later the driver crashed.
"He was behind the vehicle a good distance and when he came up to Liberty and Herron he observed a cloud of smoke," said Pittsburgh police Cmdr. Scott Schubert.
Schubert said upon impact the car Glaser was in flipped and she was ejected from the car.
"It's very unfortunate," said Schubert.
The woman was taken to UPMC Mercy Hospital where she later died.
Online court records show Glaser had been arrested for robbery and burglary in recent months, before those charges were either withdrawn or dismissed at the district judge level.
Police say Glaser may have known the woman who reported the car stolen.
