ROME, ITALY — A new McDonald's opened last week near Vatican City, drawing harsh criticism from some fellow local restaurant owners and residents.
Jokingly referred to as "McVatican's," the restaurant opened about 100 yards from the Vatican in a building owned by the Vatican state.
Restaurant and bar owners from the surrounding area are complaining that the decision by the Vatican's real estate entity to rent the eight-shop space to the fast food chain will have a negative impact on the traditional cuisine of their neighborhood.
But the fast food restaurant is proving popular with tourists and clergy and joins two other McDonald's already in the immediate area.
