Officers shot at by man who prompted hours-long standoff in Lower Burrell

LOWER BURRELL, Pa. — A man was taken into custody Saturday morning after he shot at police officers and prompted a standoff in Lower Burrell that lasted more than six hours, police said.

Luis Gibb, 42, surrendered to authorities just before 8 a.m., police said. He had been the subject of the standoff at a home on Nanak Drive since about 1:30 a.m.

According to a criminal complaint, police were initially dispatched to the home after Gibb’s wife reported that Gibb pointed a loaded gun at her and that shots had been fired.

When officers arrived on Nanak Drive, Gibb, who was seen on the front porch of the home, pointed a handgun at them, the complaint said. The officers took cover on the ground, at which point two shots were fired and Gibb ran toward the back of the house and out of sight. Several more shots were heard.

Additional police units were requested and a perimeter was established until Gibb surrendered.

Gibb’s wife told police that she had picked up her husband from a bar in Arnold and that he was intoxicated and verbally hostile, the complaint said. After they got home, she said Gibb pushed her several times before choking her. She then grabbed a pair of scissors, stabbed him and ran out of the house.

According to the complaint, Gibb’s wife told police that before she called 911, Gibb opened the front door of the home and pointed a handgun at her. She hid under a neighbor’s pine tree and heard two shots.

Gibb is facing a list of charges. He is being held in the Westmoreland County Jail on $750,000 bond.
