Online Shoe Retailer Zappos Customer Database Hacked

PITTSBURGH,None — Hackers got into a major retailer's computer system and may have compromised as many as 24 million Zappos.com accounts. E-mails are going out to customers asking them to change their passwords.

The company admits it's bad, but says it could have been worse. It appears hackers got into the online shoe store's accounts, but they didn't get into the database that stores credit card numbers and payment information.

If you've shopped with Zappos.com, you may be getting an email explaining what happened.

It says hackers may have gained "illegal and unauthorized access" to your name, e-mail address, billing address, phone number and the last four digits of your credit card number. They may also have access to your crytographically scrambled password, but not your actual password.

The email stresses that payment information was not compromised.

If you received an alert from Zappos.com, go to their website and follow the instruction to change your password.

Zappos also recommends that you change your password on any other sites where you used the same password. Remember, Zappos.com will never ask for personal information in an email.

Be careful if you get an email with a link that appears to be from Zappos.com or another retailer. If the link takes you to a site that asks for personal or account information, it's probably sent by thieves phishing for information.
