SOMERSET COUNTY, Pa. — A pregnant Somerset County woman was shot and killed two weeks before her due date, police said.
According to police, 23-year-old Caressa Kovalcik was pregnant with her second child when she was shot once in the face following an argument with her boyfriend, Denver Blough.
Blough was arrested Saturday and charged with killing Kovalcik and attempting to kill her unborn baby.
The child, officials said, survived after doctors performed an emergency c-section.
The shooting happened Saturday night at the couple's 19th Street apartment in Windber.
“She was a very good mother. They probably lived here for just more than a year,” said David Petrunak.
Investigators believe a heated argument between Kovalcik and Blough prompted the shooting.. Blough remains behind bars.
“Nobody is really sure what motivated him to do this. As far as I know, they had no history of domestic disturbance or anything like that,” Brian Dunton said.
