Pool Accident Victim's Heart Given To Boy In Need Of Transplant

KITTANNING, Pa.,None — The death of an 8-year-old boy who died after a swimming pool accident in Armstrong County led to the saving of another child over the weekend.

Trent Barrett died Sunday at Children's Hospital in Pittsburgh.

He was hurt Saturday night while swimming at Staley's Trailer Court Motel in Kittanning.

Barrett was at the pool with his sister and grandmother and family members said they think he hit his head on the diving board.

Their grandmother rented a room because they don't have access to a pool in their neighborhood.

No one saw what happened because the grandmother was occupied with his sister.

Another patron of the hotel said Barrett was discovered under the water and not breathing at about 6 p.m.

"He was trying to do flips off the diving board, so the assumption is he got winded, ran up to do the flip, smacked his head off the diving board and went into the water," said Tucker Barrett, the child's father.

Barrett was rushed to the hospital where he died Sunday morning.

His heart was given to another boy who was in need of a transplant.

"I knew that there was nothing left I could do for my son. I knew I could preserve the life of somebody else and help that person live a happy, full and prosperous life," his father said.

Barrett's cause of death has not yet been determined.

The Armstrong County District Attorney is working with the medical examiner to determine whether an autopsy is necessary.
