Proud to be from Pittsburgh: Citiparks swim lessons

On a hot day, nothing is better than a swim in the pool. That’s why the city of Pittsburgh is working to make sure all kids have the tools they need to stay safe while cooling off in the summer.

Swim lessons are offered for $20, ensuring kids from every household have access to the skill.

“It’s the only sport that can save your life,” said swim coach Hosea Holder, Jr. “It’s something they carry with them the rest of their lives. No matter how old you get, you can always good swimming.”

Several recent near-drownings in the Pittsburgh-area emphasize the importance of knowing how to swim.

During lessons at city pools, kids are taught blowing bubbles and kicking, treading water and the crawl swim stroke. In two weeks, each child has his or her favorite way to have fun in the pool.

Parent Laura Heidinger said the lessons helped her daughter build confidence in the water.

Two more sessions of swim lessons are being offered this summer. For information on how to sign up and which pools offer them, CLICK HERE.
