Airlines approve restart of new PIT terminal

MOON TWP. — A modernization effort at Pittsburgh International Airport could soon be restarting after the airlines that serve the airport agreed March 17 to restart the construction project.

The airlines agreed to fund $182 million in construction site prep work for the billion-dollar effort to build a new 700,000-square-foot terminal that consolidates ticketing, security checkpoints and baggage claim, and multi-modal complex that includes a new 3,300-space parking garage, rental car facilities and entrance roadways designed to improve the passenger experience, according to The Allegheny County Airport Authority’s Blue Sky website.

The approval allows the authority to bid and award contracts for structural steel and concrete decks, foundations and underground utilities later this spring, and it provides funds for additional design of airside terminal renovations, ongoing program management and other work, the release states.

During the yearlong pause, officials reexamined the design specifically through the lens of public health and safety to address new concerns created by the pandemic, according to the release.

The total project budget stands at $1.39 billion, up from $1.1 billion when it was announced in September 2017. The increases come from design evolution agreed to by the airlines — which are the primary funders of the project — and the cost of the one-year pandemic delay.

Construction is expected to be completed by the end of 2024, with the new terminal opening in early 2025.
