Airport’s $1.1B terminal modernization delayed

PITTSBURGH — The financing and start of construction of Pittsburgh International Airport’s $1.1 billion terminal modernization has officially been delayed due to Covid-19, although the project is still expected to become reality.

The April 23 date initially planned for early site work came and went, and the Allegheny County Airport Authority will not be selling bonds in May as previously envisioned before Covid-19 and the subsequent gutting of the airline industry. The as-yet-undetermined pause applies to the construction phase of the project, but design — about 60 percent completed already — is continuing, Allegheny County Airport Authority CEO Christina Cassotis said.

“We feel strongly, as do our airline partners, that this is the right direction to go in, the right decision,” Cassotis told the Business Times on Tuesday. “The question is, when is the right time to borrow money? When is the right time to start construction? We’re not there yet. There hasn’t been a settling. We’re still in the middle of this.”
