Ash Wednesday drive thru at Allegheny County church different amid COVID-19 pandemic

WHITE OAK, Pa. — For the last seven years, Faith Lutheran Church in White Oak has been doing what it calls an “ash and dash” on Ash Wednesday.

This year, instead of placing ashes on foreheads in the sign of the cross, they’re handing out ashes a different way.

People started showing up at 6 a.m. Wednesday to receive either a cross is drawn with a black marker on the cloth, or ashes in the shape of a cross on a little sticker.

Since it’s so cold, pastors from three congregations stayed inside until they saw someone walk up or drive up to get ashes.

“We’re trying to meet people where they are and where they feel comfortable, and they don’t have to leave their car. And we can do it safely,” said Jessica McClure Archer, pastor of Sampson’s Mills Presbyterian Church.

“It’s sad. Sad that we have to wear a mask. Sad that you can’t touch people. It’s just sad, and it’s sad for the elderly,” said Mary Yenavich.

“There is hope, and as we continue to work together we can see our way through,” said William Meekins, pastor of McKeesport Shared Ministry.

The event ended at 9 a.m., but if you missed it, there are still opportunities for you to get your ashes here in White Oak. All you have to do is walk up to the door of Faith Lutheran Church before the 7 p.m. service or the Sampson’s Mills Presbyterian Church until 1 p.m.
