Asphalt art project getting mixed reaction in Pittsburgh neighborhood

PITTSBURGH — The pavement was painted over the weekend with bright colors at a problem intersection of Wyoming Street and Virginia and Southern Avenues in Mt. Washington.

According to the city, the artwork thins the roadways, which has been shown in national studies to reduce the speed of vehicles.

There are also painted walkways for pedestrians. While some neighbors call the asphalt art a waste of money, others say it’s a step in the right direction

According to executive director Gordon Davidson with the Mt. Washington Community Development Corporation, a $20,000 grant paid for this pilot project.

In two weeks, the asphalt art project will be evaluated.

From there, Davidson says they’ll determine what will be done to improve the intersection, if anything. The paint used is temporary for now and will eventually wash away.
