Developer looking to transform old building in East Liberty

PITTSBURGH — More new development is coming to Pittsburgh’s East Liberty neighborhood with the transformation of an old building.

The building along Centre Avenue has sat vacant for some time. The once thriving space used to house a screen-printing business, but it is currently overgrown and graffitied.

A developer is looking to give the 37,500 square foot building, which just sold for $3.78 million, a second chance.

The building is the focus of a redevelopment project that would include a six-story, mixed use, 150 apartment unit complex.

The project is expected to cost the developers $45 million.

Officials said part of the deal includes demolishing the space and starting from the ground up.

While there is initial excitement over the project, there is also some concern.

“I just hope that it will be affordable for the residents that are currently here,” Jason Weir, of East Liberty, said.

There is no timetable for when work might begin.
