A literal pillar of the community, the Pleasant Grove Baptist Church in East Finley Township was set to be auctioned off and torn down. There could be a parking lot installed in its place.
"My mother was married there, aunt married there. Actually my grandmother who is 103, her mother started going to church in this church," Jay Plant said.
Plant said his ancestors were some of the first to attend the church.
The future of the church was a hot topic on social media, with many wanting the church to turn into a community center or wedding venue. An online petition had hundred of signatures Monday night.
