PITTSBURGH — For those struggling to pay their mortgage or rent, Pennsylvania is providing almost $1 billion in emergency funding to those in need.
“The people who have felt the brunt of this pandemic deserve to see a light at the end of this tunnel,” said Erin James, Pennsylvania Department of Human Services.
The commonwealth is highlighting programs available to help people financially during the COVID-19 pandemic.
“Not only have communities of color suffered higher rates of infection and serious illnesses and death, the economic impacts are disproportionately felt in those communities as well,” said James
Michael Jasper, who lives in Pittsburgh’s Hill District, tells Channel 11 – he agrees.
He believes programs, such as the state’s financial assistance program, play a vital role when it comes to the greater good.
“I think these communities are the hardest hit so we have to make sure that they are brought back to where they were because the economy can’t thrive without them,” said Jasper.
On Tuesday, officials with the commonwealth urged people in our underserved neighborhoods to apply for assistance if they are struggling financially.
“The disproportionality of COVID-19′s adverse impacts are unmistakable when we look at the pandemic through the lens of racial equity,” said James.
If you want to know if you are eligible for assistance, you can learn more about the program here.
