Adams, who is African American, was hired in June 2015. According to the lawsuit, when the city hired Adams, he was "immediately sent to African American beer gardens and told to buy drugs."

The lawsuit said when Adams made a comment about more black officers joining the force, a police sergeant said, "They could if they weren't so busy doing drugs and getting arrested. Most of them have criminal records."

Another incident detailed in the lawsuit was an alleged comment made during a spaghetti lunch in the break room. The lawsuit said one officer said to Adams, "I bet you are disappointed that it is not fried chicken."

The lawsuit claims Adams tried to meet with the mayor and other supervisors, and those supervisors were often in the room when comments were made.

Adams was fired in April 2016 and was given a letter with nine reasons for his termination. However, Adams claims he was never reprimanded while employed.

Channel 11 called and emailed both the Police Department and city solicitor for a comment about the allegations, but had not received a response as of Friday night.
