JEANNETTE, Pa. — A former student has filed a lawsuit against the Jeannette City School District saying administrators knew about sexual abuse caused by a teacher.

According to our partners at TribLIVE.com, the victim was 14 at the time when he met former teacher Maria Chappell. Chappell was charged with having sex with a student in 2016 and was ordered to serve jail time and probation.

The victim said during the 2015-2016 school year, the relationship became sexual. Court documents state the victim told investigators they had sexual contact about 50 times, including in Chappell’s classroom.

Court papers said Chappell had covered the window into the classroom to obstruct any view into the room. The suit said district leaders had ordered her to uncover it, but she never did.

District officials declined to comment.
