Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank cancels biggest fundraiser of year because of coronavirus concerns

PITTSBURGH — Sporting events are being postponed and parades are being canceled, but crucial community services are being impacted by the coronavirus, too.

The Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank canceled their biggest fundraiser of year out of an abundance of caution.

This year, they said they were expecting between 800 and 1,000 people.

They said they took into account the governor’s recommendations discouraging large gatherings.

The Food Bank tells us they were looking at all options including setting up a drive thru instead of having the gathering, but ultimately it wasn’t possible.

They did say they are trying to keep their other services running normally.

They said in a statement, ““The Food Bank is working closely with our community partners to identify who is in need of food and ensure they will have access to it.“

The Food Bank said they’re going to monitor this development and once they know the area isn’t at risk for coronavirus they will consider setting a new date.
