How often do we breathe in unhealthy air in Pittsburgh? New report takes a look

PITTSBURGH — The air we breathe in Pittsburgh isn’t as bad as in some other cities, but it’s still considered to be unhealthy about 57 days out of the year.

Data from 2020 was compiled by PennEnvironment Research & Policy Center and Frontier Group. The report focused on ground-level ozone and pollutants that come from burning fossil fuels, such as coal, diesel and gas.

According to the report, more than one in six Americans -- 58.4 million people -- experienced more than 100 days of air pollution at levels above what the Environmental Protection Agency considers “good.”

While Pittsburgh came in at under 100 days, Olivia Ross Perfetti, with PennEnvironment, said it’s still concerning.

“I think we’re still seeing, with 57 days of bad air, that it remains a serious problem here,” Perfetti said.

PennEnvironment is calling on state officials to support Pennsylvania’s entry into the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative and transition to 100% renewable energy.

Cities in California got hit the hardest, mostly because of wildfires. The report listed Los Angeles with 209 days at elevated ozone levels.
