Ice rink at PPG Place gets opening date for 2020

PITTSBURGH — The ice rink at PPG Place in downtown Pittsburgh has an opening date for 2020.

On Nov. 20, the Friday before Thanksgiving, Pittsburghers will be able to head to the plaza between Third and Fourth avenues and put on their ice skates.

The rink is 67% larger than the Rockefeller Center ice rink, and two-thirds the size of a standard National Hockey League rink, according to PPG Place’s website.

A COVID-19 protocol will be in place. It will follow all guidelines set by local, state and federal authorities.

The protocol includes:

  • Those waiting in line must maintain 6 feet of distance.
  • Masks must be worn when entering the skate rental area or outside when people cannot socially distance.
  • Temperature checks will be performed on those that wish to enter skate rental area.
  • Frequently touched surfaces will be cleaned and disinfected frequently.
  • Admission size will be limited to the local guidelines for outdoor gatherings.
