Local farmers market still serving meals during time of uncertainty

BELLEVUE, Pa. — With food insecurity a real fear for people right now, a local farmer’s market is helping out.

The Bellevue Farmers Market continued to serve meals last weekend.

“We’ve seen a lot of people who will be at risk, and we knew that was a very real threat,” Mallory Cuiksza, a Bellevue Farmers Market Committee member, said.

Cuiksza, along with other committee members and her husband, made meals for people in Bellevue and the surrounding community at Greenstone United Methodist Church.

On Sunday, 400 servings were handed out to 200 people and nothing was left over, leaving no doubt the meal service had to continue.

However, they’ve decided to change a few things with their next meal.

Easier, less expensive meals that can serve more people will be made, and they will be delivered instead of having people go to the church.

“That risk is there, but I think it also needs to balance against the incredible need, and there are so many people who are literally not going to eat,” Cuiksza said.

Two more churches will allow them to use kitchen space, so organizers anticipate being able to make 750 meals for Thursday night and this weekend.
