Boil water advisory lifted for West End residents

PITTSBURGH — The broken water main that shut down a busy road in Pittsburgh’s West End has been repaired and the boil water advisory has been lifted.

The break in a 20-inch water main happened about 7:15 p.m. Sunday on West Carson Street. Water flooded the street, and a salt truck was brought in because of the cold temperatures.

Pennsylvania Water and Sewer Authority crews worked to isolate the break and close valves in the area before beginning repairs.

Crews worked around the clock to cut away the section of damaged pipe. With repairs now complete, the focus is on repairing the West Carson Street bypass and reopening that section to traffic.

West Carson Street was closed in each direction between Corliss Street and the West End Circle, which reopened about 9 a.m. Monday.

In addition to the water main break on West Carson Street, there were smaller breaks Sunday night in Pittsburgh’s Esplen neighborhood on Stafford, Tabor and Walcott streets, the PWSA official said. Repairs were completed on Stafford and Tabor streets, but they continue on Walcott Street.

While a small number of customers were impacted by the smaller water main breaks, according to the PWSA, the area falls within the area under the boil water advisory.
