Man in custody after SWAT team surrounds Beaver County home

PULASKI TOWNSHIP, Pa. — Police surrounded a Beaver County home inside which a man is barricaded on Monday.

A SWAT team was called to the area of 43rd Street and Sunflower Road in Pulaski Township.

The suspect, identified as Benjamin Cook, 24, has been taken into custody.

Cook allegedly had several long guns and a handgun in the home with him.

Cook was shooting a gun off the back porch of the home.

The SWAT team was staged behind the home. According to the district attorney, the SWAT team was in negotiations with since 7-8 p.m.

The incident started after Cook was holding his girlfriend against her will for several hours. She tried to escape, Cook found her and went outside firing shots off the porch, according to the district attorney.

One neighbor witnessed the incident as her son was coming home from school.

"We heard the lady on the bullhorn going through our neighborhood telling us to bring our pets in and lock the doors, everybody stay inside,” Michelle Johnson said.

Several agencies came to help rotate crews in and out Monday.

The district attorney said it was a tiring standoff.

“You can imagine being a sniper and you're sitting on a rooftop or someone's attic or on a hillside watching a window and watching the door and after several hours, the fatigue sets in," said Beaver County District Attorney David Lozier.

Many neighbors were forced to stay inside or hide in their basements.
