McKeesport dealing with busing shortage due in part to Pittsburgh schools starting up

MCKEESPORT, Pa. — Pittsburgh Public Schools isn’t the only school district scrambling to find enough buses and drivers to get kids to class. McKeesport Area School District is also in the same boat.

“The said basically show up at our scheduled time and see if the bus comes,” Ebony Henry said.

Henry’s five children got to school in McKeesport alongside Joel Rishel’s.

“It’s an inconvenience for sure,” Rishel said.

On the district’s website, this message was posted Thursday:

“Our contracted bus company, PA Coach Lines, has notified us that there will be a possible interruption in transportation for some families. Please be aware that beginning Friday morning PA Coach Lines may decide to not deploy several buses based on a driver shortage.”

“We will probably wait at the bus stop with our boys. If the bus doesn’t show up, we bring them in,” Rishel said.

The president of PA Coach Lines said the company is down to 10-12 drivers a day and that number is shrinking. He said although they pay drivers $21 per hour, he said many are leaving to drive kids in the Pittsburgh Public School District. Drivers there are being offered a $5,000 signing bonus.

The bus company won’t know until Friday morning which stops will be impacted. It depends on which drivers show up for work.

District officials said they would notify parents as soon as they learn what routes won’t have drivers.
