Meet UPMC Magee’s first ‘Leap Day’ baby of 2020

PITTSBURGH — Feb. 29 only happens once every four years, known as a “leap year” – in which February has an extra day. And for new mothers and their babies, it was a very special “Leap Day.”

The “Leap Day” babies technically won’t have a birthday each year, but one mother told Channel 11 they’ll find a way.

Nyla Allen was the hospital’s first Leap Day baby, according to officials. She was born at 1 a.m. at UPMC Magee, and her mother, Toyaii Rutherford, said they were hoping she’d come on Feb. 28 but are happy nonetheless.

“We were hoping that she would come on the 28th because (with the) Leap Year, we won’t be able to celebrate her birthday every year, but we’ll figure something out,” Rutherford said.

Officials there have been seven Leap Day babies born so far.

Rutherford said her baby girl is perfectly healthy, weighing seven pounds, five ounces.
